John de Witt, NASA’s Senior Bio-mechanist leading the optimisation of astronauts’ performance in reduced gravity, has confirmed he will be sharing his expertise with the world’s top sports coaches at the prestigious, invite-only Leaders in Performance conference, Chelsea FC, on 10th and 11th October 2012.
He will be speaking alongside a panel of experts from different fields of sporting performance, including UK Sport’s Head of Research and Innovation, Scott Kean, and on the same programme as, amongst others, Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer the coach of Molde FK, Charles van Commenee, Team GB’s head Athletics Coach, and Mark Verstegen, the world famous athletic coach and NFL Players Association Performance Director.
De Witt said “In space exploration, an astronaut’s performance is directly linked to the scientific projects undertaken in order to identify outcomes for individuals and groups. I am sure the same holds true in sport and I am really excited to be sharing knowledge and ideas with my colleagues and peers in sport identifying best practice to achieve a better understanding of performance”
James Worrall, Leaders CEO, said “John and the team at NASA are at the very forefront of innovation and have much to share with the top sports coaches managing and developing elite talent. With the other top speakers lined up for this year we’re all set for some inspirational, dynamic and challenging debate to push the boundaries of human performance.”
As the Senior Biomechanist at The Exercise Physiology and Countermeasures Laboratory at NASA’s Johnson Space Centre in Houston, De Witt focuses on unique and innovative scientific projects designed to quantify and optimise human performance in reduced gravity. He is also heavily involved in football coaching and analysis and is the Head Sports Performance Coach at MLS club Houston Dynamo’s Academy.
