The Leaders Sports Summit is delighted to announce Billy Beane, General Manager of the Oakland A’s and the pioneer of modern day recruitment in sport, as a keynote speaker for the Leaders in Performance section of the event.
Beane’s announcement coincides with a wave of interest forcing the organisers to announce a complete sell out with over 2 weeks to go. Those who missed out have been transferred to a growing waiting list as the enquiries continue to flood in.
Beane will be interviewed by Simon Kuper, Financial Times correspondent and author of Soccernomics, about the prominence and importance of stats in sport. Beane will undoubtedly draw from his own personal experience, famously picking undervalued hitters with a high on-base percentage to form his original A’s team, as well as discussing examples across the sporting world.
Beane turned the identification and recruitment of players into a science, famously charted in the bestselling book “Moneyball” and has moulded the A’s into a perennial post-season contender whilst running the club as one of the most cost effective in the MLB. Throughout his career Beane has been awarded a number of honours including The Sporting News’ Executive of the Year’, Major League Baseball’s Executive of the Year, and Street & Smith’s Sport Business Journal’s “40 Under 40″ list. Moneyball has recently been turned into a film, with Beane being played by Brad Pitt, which is set to come out this month in the US and in November/December across Europe.
The impressive list of speakers now includes; Matthew Syed, former British Olympian & Author, Bounce; Frank Arnesen, Sporting Director, Hamburg SV; Kevin Plank, Owner, Under Armour; Lord Mervyn Davies, Former Chairman, Standard Chartered Bank; Mark Cavendish, Professional Cyclist and Tour de France Green Jersey Winner; David Brailsford, Performance Director, British Cycling; Geoff McGrath, Managing Director, McClaren Applied Technologies; Andy Barr, Head of Performance and Therapy, NY Knicks; RC Buford, General Manager, San Antonio Spurs; Hakim Chalabi, Assistant Chief Medical Officer, Aspetar; Gerry Ramogida, Lead Performance Therapist, UK Athletics and consultant to the Seattle Seahawks; Stephen Parks, RYA Olympic Manager, RYA Skandia Team GBR; and Dr Steve Peters, Psychiatrist, British Cycling.
